#Teaser of Shattered (The Russian Guns, 5) - Coming Soon
One last teaser to share before the release of Shattered. It's just a couple of days away! I'm so excited. So, here's a look into Claire and one of the issues she has to deal with about her own family. It'll give you a little bit of insight to her character.

Turning on the chaise, Aileen set her wine glass to the small table and clapped her hands loudly. “Kissa!”
Without making a single sound, a young girl who was maybe eighteen emerged from the shadowed corner of the room with her head down and her hands clasped below her waist.
She didn’t make eye contact with Claire or Aileen as she asked, “Yes, Ma’am?”
“Get us some water, would you? Something to wash this back. Claire doesn’t like the taste, but I think she just needs a better palate.”
Kissa nodded. “Yes, Ma’am.”
Claire barely held her disgust in as Kissa scattered from the room as quickly as she’d shown herself. That child—because, at her age, that’s exactly what she should be called—was one of the things that turned Claire’s stomach inside out when she thought about her family … and even Liam.
Modern day slaves.
Claire didn’t know where they came from. She didn’t know how they were taken or what came of them when they disappeared. She was never allowed to ask. Voicing an opinion on the men, women, and sometimes young children who showed up on her family’s doorstep over the years looking tattered, malnourished, and sometimes beaten only earned her a thrashing, too.
After a while, Claire learned to stop questioning and just pretend like it wasn’t happening.
It was impossible. She couldn’t pretend, but she learned to be more observant about her family when she helped the people or talked to them in private. While she couldn’t make the situation better for people like Kissa in her own home growing up, she had given them a friend and a confidant to talk to.
Claire never hurt them, not once. If she could, she took the blame for certain things that had been a slave’s fault so they wouldn’t have to face the consequences.
It was not okay.
It was not right.
She didn’t know what more to do for them without getting everyone killed and that made her even guiltier.
Her heart broke knowing the people she was related to sold humans like they were nothing more than commodities to be traded and bartered on. Souls—living, breathing, bleeding people.
And they were treated like livestock.
Claire took a small sense of comfort in knowing Aileen in particular took good care of whoever came into her home. Some, like Kissa, were simply more skittish than others because Aileen wasn’t their first owner and the last likely didn’t treat them well at all.
Not that it made it any better.
Claire didn’t excuse or justify her aunt, uncle, or the rest of her family. There was nothing worthy of use to defend them. Not that they deserved for her to try.
She couldn’t help but think of the Avdonins, too. She knew they didn’t deal in human trafficking, not even prostitution. They also weren’t good people with one hand in the drug trade and another in arms trafficking.
It wasn’t as though she thought one family was better than the other, but she respected Anton for his position on the fact that in no way was it acceptable for his Russian family to dabble in the trafficking of souls. He also didn’t give rationalizations for why he did do the things he did with substance and weapons. Instead, he said if he didn’t, someone else would.
Without a doubt, Claire knew he was right.
Unfortunately, the same thing could be said for the Dolan and MacBride families. She knew that if Anton succeeded in his goal of killing Liam, someone else would take the man’s place and continue with this way of life. Stealing lives and selling them for others to use and abuse however they saw fit.
This wasn’t going to fix that. It would take a hell of a lot more than just one woman to correct that and make it go away—maybe it never would, according to some. But at least one more monster would die.
Claire figured that made the rest worth it.
It wouldn’t ease Claire’s guilt for the person she had failed to protect from those closest to her, but it might help someone else. Somehow, hopefully. That’s all she wished for.
“She’s doing so much better,” Aileen said under her breath, drawing Claire from her troubled thoughts.
Hmm, who?”
Claire did flinch that time. “You know I don’t approve—”
“Yes, yes. I know. I was just observing, that’s all. Anyway, she is. And thank God, because you’re uncle has been in a rage for a good month.”
Claire knew if she pressed the right buttons on her aunt, she would get some of the info needed to please Anton. “About what?”
“Nothing for you to concern yourself with, dear. But if it keeps up, I’m afraid Liam might make a trip to New York to settle things out himself.”
A shiver worked its way up Claire’s spine, chilling her to the bone. “Oh?”
“Well, maybe Brian can get it worked out without Liam’s help.”
“Should I be extra careful, or something?”
When it came to women and the mafia … well, they weren’t supposed to know a thing. Claire was mindful about how she posed the question to her aunt. It seemed like she was asking if someone might come after her, but what she would gather from her aunt’s answer would be a tell if her family knew the Russians were slowly working in on them to draw Liam out from safety.
Mmm, no, I don’t think so.” Aileen smiled tightly. “Besides, Brian is gathering everyone for a meeting of some sort.”
“Not us, of course,” her aunt responded. “I’m sure whatever this is will pass. We haven’t had any problems since Cavan, you know.”
Claire tried to seem surprised. “No, I don’t know. What happened?”
Aileen made a face. “Nothing, dear. He just found himself in some trouble and Liam took care of it.”
Apparently trouble meant death.
God, it was sickening how her family still swept Cavan’s brutal, awful nature under the rug even with him dead. Like they had to continue protecting him, for whatever reason.
Something fell over up above them, followed by the sound of Brian’s heavy cursing.
“Oh, bloody hell,” her aunt muttered. “He needs to lay off the whiskey, the fool.”
Claire decided that was her cue to make a hasty exit. Standing from the couch, she made a point of glancing at her watch. “I should go.”
“You don’t have—”
“No, I should. I have a shift tomorrow.”
Aileen frowned. “You and work. At least you’re staying out of trouble, Claire. Next week?”
“Sure.” Claire gestured in the direction where Kissa had gone to get them water. “Apologize to her for me running out without cleaning up my mess?”
“God, why? She doesn’t need your apologies, dear. It’s her job.”
No, it was her sentence imposed by someone else. One the poor girl hadn’t asked for and certainly didn’t deserve. Kissa was human, too, regardless of how the people around her acted. Claire wouldn’t see her as something to be owned like the rest of her family did.
Claire forced herself not to snap back at her aunt when she said, “Just tell her, okay.”
“Whatever you need, Claire, but she won’t care.”

Yeah, she doubted that.

“Don’t fall in love with me. I ruin beautiful things.”

Love made him this way, but life makes him stay.

Life doesn’t give a redo. There’s no rewind or pause button to take you back or stop time. Once something happens, it happened. The most tragic of those times in his life, the ones he wouldn’t get back and the moments he could never fix, reminded Demyan Avdonin of a bullet meeting glass.

The impact of the bullet doesn't break the glass into pieces, but instead, leaves behind a single hole surrounded by a spider web of cracks. Fragile cracks that, when handled with the utmost care, would splinter into shards of what used to be.

Demyan thought he had been broken beyond repair once, four long years ago.

He was wrong.

She touched the glass, unknowing of the cracks holding him together. These are the broken pieces of a shattered man and the woman who made him live.

Life made him this way, but love makes him stay.

What I #amreading this week! #SoMuchPretty #DirtyLittleSecrets
Sharing my reads for this week. One is a new read from an ARC and another is re-read for me.

First is the re-read - So Much Pretty by Cara Hoffman. If you haven't picked up this novel, you should. It's a shame you haven't. I can't even give much away about it without ruining everything. It's a masterpiece. Whether you like it or not, this novel challenges your way of thinking. It makes you ask why and if it were you, what would you do?

Add to Goodreads TBR.

The second is Dirty Little Secrets by Erin Ashley Tanner. This is my ARC read for the week. I'm excited to dive into this as it's not often I read in the genre I write (for personal reasons). So, we'll see.

Add to Goodreads TBR.

Interestingly enough, these novels couldn't be move different from one another. One is horrifying in topic and nature, the other a romance. I think that's an interesting look at my reading quirks if there ever was one needed. Ha.

Happy reading!

Dirty Little Secrets by Erin Ashley Tanner - @ErinTheAuthor is on Pre-order! #Mafia #Romance
I'm so excited for my girl! She wanted to dip her toes in the mafia romance sector and she did so with a bang. I'm one of the lucky people with an ARC to read and review, so keep watch for that. In the meantime, check out the pretty cover and pre-order!

Danger ignites a passion neither of them can refuse.

Her determination to shield her child from the ugliness of her past takes a hit when a man claiming to be her late husband's son barges through her front door.
Dominic Sambarino demands half of her daughter's inheritance. Ava wastes no time showing him she'll come out swinging with everything she has. But no amount of fight in the world can prepare her for the instant, smoldering chemistry between the two of them.
A friend's invitation for a weekend getaway is a welcome chance to regroup, or so Ava thinks. Damian stared at the colorful screen of his laptop, wondering if he should make the call.
“What are you doing?” Tommas asked, tipping back his beer to finish what was left.
“Thinking,” Damian replied.
“It’s a little late to be having second thoughts.”
Damian flipped his cousin the middle finger. “Not about the wedding.”
“Good, because you’re due at the altar in …” Tommas trailed off, checking his watch. “Fifteen hours.”
“Thanks for the reminder.”
“You should sleep, Damian.”
Damian had too much shit to consider before he could sleep.
“What are you still doing here?” Damian asked. “The party ended hours ago.”
Well, if you could consider a few friends hanging around drinking and doing nothing else a party. Tommas refused to let Damian get married without some kind of final goodbye to his single life. Damian consented to his cousin and a couple of Tommas’ friends coming over to his apartment for a few beers and a game of poker.
Damian won the poker match. He always did.
“Giving you company,” Tommas finally answered.
Damian passed Tommas a look. “I don’t believe that for a second.”
“Yeah, well, fucking deal with it. I’m not giving you anything else.”
Tommas didn’t have to. Damian already knew. Abriella Trentini was on a shorter leash than ever before. With the families fighting like they were, it was probably damn near impossible for Tommas to get any time around the girl.
“You’re sulking about Abriella again, aren’t you?” Damian asked.
Tommas scowled. “I thought you didn’t want to know.”
“I don’t, but I figure it’d be rude if I didn’t ask.”
“That, and you like to know everything.”
“Partly,” Damian agreed.
“I just … it fucking sucks,” Tommas decided on saying.
Damian could understand that. He wouldn’t like it very much if the thing he loved was kept from him, either. Even if Tommas’ and Abriella’s situation was a precarious one simply because of their ages and other minor details. Like her grandfather.
“My place feels empty,” Tommas added.
“If you grow a uterus and your dick turns inside out, don’t call me to whine about it,” Damian said, chuckling.
Tommas opened his mouth to speak, but shut it just as fast. “Asshole.”
“I try.”
“I should get going,” Tommas said, sighing. “Try to sleep.”
Well, Abriella would be at the wedding tomorrow standing with Lily. As long as Tommas kept things clean, he could probably get away with at least talking to his lover.
“Are you good?” Tommas asked Damian.
Damian nodded toward the apartment door. “I’m fine, Tommas. Really.”
“You sure?”
Damian had never been surer of anything in his life like he was for Lily. He adored that woman—loved her entirely.
“Yeah, get out of here,” Damian said.
Tommas smiled and pushed up from the chair. “I’ll be here to pick you up bright and early. Confession before pleasure, as the saying goes.”
Damian scoffed. “I never confess anything.”
He had nothing worth confessing. Nothing he wanted forgiveness for, anyway.
“Whatever. It’s tradition for the Rossi family. Suck it up. Knowing you, you’re going to need a couple of extra hours for penance.”
“Hey—” Damian stopped himself before adding, “Probably. Get the hell out of here already.”

Tommas’ hands flew up. “Going, going.”

Shattered: A Russian Guns Novel is on pre-order!

I am ridiculously excited and sad at the same time. This series has literally had the last 2 years of my life in its hold and it didn't let go until the very last word was out. I owe so much to the fans of this series--they really made writing it worth wild for me. Those people and readers know who they are and I love them deeply.

The final Russian Guns novel is coming.

Writing to Music

Every writer is different when it comes to music and writing. Some like silence. Some like music. For me, music is integral to the writing process. It’s the soundtrack to the lives of the characters we’re writing.  Angst ridden stories usually involve hours of listening to emotional songs, which drive the story along as we write.

Every book I write or co-write has its own playlist and I hope you enjoy 5 of the songs from my In the Distance playlist.

Because sometimes it takes some distance to finally see what’s right in front of you…
Tyler Mitchell has worked hard to rebuild his life after his family kicked him out. A culinary student and sous chef who spends his spare time volunteering with kids, he’s happy enough even though he has no time to consider a relationship.
Trevor Pratt is finally getting over losing his best friend and the one person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, but it’s taken screwing every cute guy in Manhattan to get there. He’s vowed to repair the friendship he endangered, but that’s hard to do when his friend’s new employee catches his eye. Despite being warned to stay away from Tyler, Trevor knows the sous chef is more than just a hookup.
Romance is a terrible idea. Trevor is ten years older and a relentless playboy. Tyler is still unsure of his place in the world. Neither of them is ready for life-changing love, but as things heat up, their chemistry in the bedroom might just take that decision out of their hands.
Read about Ethan and Jamie's romance in In the Raw and In The Fire, Books 1 & 2 in the In The Kitchen Series, available now!

I threw him a dirty look over my shoulder as we walked out of the diner. “Okay. So I might have had my dad’s Platinum AmEx card to help me out, but I struggled just like the rest of my classmates.”

Tyler’s low, deep laugh hit me in all the right, and wrong, places. “Poor baby. I’m sure it was hard to choose between the double shot extra whip latte and the regular Joe Blow latte.”

God, it was good to hear him laugh. “Hey now. Leave my double shot latte out of this,” I shot back as I unlocked the doors to the Mercedes coupe I’d rented.

His laughter slowly faded as I pulled out of the parking lot. I had only been to Ethan’s old place a few times when Jamie had first moved back to Seattle and before they had bought a new condo together. But Tyler made sure to keep me on the right track with directions, his voice getting softer and softer the closer we got to the apartment.

I pulled up to the curb, letting the car idle instead of parking and walking him to his door. As much as I found myself not wanting the night to end, it wouldn’t have been smart to push whatever this was. Anyone else? We’d already be upstairs with Tyler’s pants around his ankles and my mouth on him. But he wasn’t just anyone else.

Tyler, who had been staring out his window, slowly turned toward me. The soft lights of the dash barely illuminated his face. God, he looked young, innocent and worth every ounce of protectiveness he brought out in the people who cared about him.

“Thanks for the ride. And dinner. It was nice.”

He turned again and reached for the door handle.

“Hey, Tyler. Wait up.”

Nothing will stop the Bratva mob boss from taking back what’s his and once he has her, he’ll do anything to keep her…

Viviana “Vine” Carducci’s and Anton Avdonin’s marriage was decided over two decades ago. The deal between leading mafia families had more on the line than anyone knew, even if the Bratva and Cosa Nostra shouldn’t have mixed. When Vine’s family is murdered and she’s left with nothing more than her grief to survive the mob world alone, she believes the arrangement won’t see the light of day.

Anton can’t allow the one woman he was supposed to love get away. At the possibility of her life ending, he steps in with guns blazing knowing exactly what it might cost him: everything. But it’s been nearly a decade since their last meeting, and he can’t help but wonder if the woman he took back is the same girl he fell for all those years before.

Protected and loved, Vine is unable to forget their shared moments a lifetime ago, or the future she knows they’re owed. When an old flame of Anton’s shows up to rip the veil off the carefully constructed secrets he’d been hiding, past lies surface, and she might just learn that nothing about her life was as it seemed. But, that’s nothing compared to the bomb about to blow. Can Vine see beyond the pain and blood to take what she always wanted? And just how far will the mob prince go to keep her safe?

In a world where violence, deceit, and greed reign, your life is not your own, and sometimes, love has to be arranged.

A contemporary erotic romance with organized crime and suspense elements
