Author @ElodieParkes talks Surprising the Alpha #Paranormal #Romance
Thank you for inviting me to your lovely blog today to talk about my new release with Siren Publishing, ‘Surprising the Alpha’, an erotic, paranormal romance.

Surprising the Alpha was originally written for an anthology, but then ultimately developed into a full-length story, and the first in ‘The Venn Pack in Love’ series.
Joshua Venn is particularly dear to me as a character. He’s sexy, an alpha, but vulnerable, and as he falls in love with Dani Cruz, the heroine, he has to accept he’s not the big bad alpha he hoped to be.
We get a glimpse of the whole Venn pack and meet the character who features in the second Venn Pack story, an erotic paranormal suspense, ‘Wolf Bond’.
I wanted this wolf-shifter pack to be different and have none of the sometimes hackneyed
wolf-lore found in this type of story. The series has a third story already in the pipeline and each story features one of the pack, in love, of course. (Smiles)

The town is dying after a new highway takes its previous through traffic and custom away from shops, cafes, the bars and tourist attractions. The Venn wolf-shifter pack and alpha, Joshua Venn, are suffering. They’ve lived happily in the town as humans and like it, but now they’re threatened with slinking back to a woodland den with their tails between their legs.
One day Dani Cruz and her brother Jason hit town. They’re entrepreneurs whose business is urban regeneration and they intend to save this town. Only one person resents their arrival, alpha wolf-shifter Joshua. Will his determination to be the only one who saves his pack drive the town to ruin? Or will something happen that changes his life forever?
Joshua Venn is looking for answers. It’s one hot summer and someone hides a secret.
This alpha is in for more than one surprise.

Read an excerpt:
Her feminine perfume surrounded him. Her heartbeat echoed in his ears. Her golden-green eyes flashed as she spoke. Her long hair flicked around her shoulders and swept the tops of her pretty arms as she spoke. Her mouth enticed him. The way her bottom lip stuck out as she stared up at him bravely sent lust speeding through him. Hardly knowing what he was doing, he grabbed her face and sank his mouth on hers. The second he kissed her every muscle in his tightly strung body relaxed.
Soft lips parted under his. Her delicate hands slipped across his chest to hold him tight.
He floated in sensation. His cock hardened deliciously. With a low growl, he let her go and stepped away, shocked not only at his needs, but also at her passionate response.
With a soft sound, Dani followed to be close to him again. “What did you think of my offer to you?”
Joshua’s hackles rose. He pushed her away, saw her unbalance, and caught her. He crushed her to his body.
She molded to him and tilted her face to his.
Joshua gazed into her eyes and saw desire, pure sexual need. His mind emptied of everything but the softness of her ass cupped in his hand. He rammed his erection against her, a low growl escaping before he kissed her so hard she whimpered. Joshua tore her shirt off, sucking her neck hungrily.

A #Teaser of Reckless & Ruined, The Chicago War, Book 2 - #ComingSoon
The release for Reckless & Ruined is coming right up! This will be one of the last teasers I share for the book before it is out in the world.

With the War, it might seem like people aren't very loyal or family doesn't matter. Some of these characters would beg to differ on that opinion. People like Evelina and Adriano.

Alessa heard Adriano’s curse just as she closed the bedroom door.
“Uh, hey, Eve,” Adriano said loudly.
Alessa cringed.
Maybe their one more time had turned into two or three.
The small hallway that led out to the kitchen and living room of the loft apartment kept Alessa hidden well enough. She turned to go back into Adriano’s bedroom, but stopped when Evelina started talking.
“You are not nearly quiet enough, Adriano,” Evelina said.
Alessa’s cheeks turned pink at what Evelina implied.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Adriano muttered.
“Right,” his sister drawled. “Where is she?”
“I don’t know—”
Alessa walked out into view of the kitchen and leaned in the small entryway.
Evelina looked her over and nodded like she knew something was up. “You’re quite a sight this morning.”
Alessa shrugged. “Yeah, well …”
She needed a shower, a hairbrush, and a facecloth to clean the smeared makeup she sported. Alessa wished she could find it in herself to care about her appearance.
“Walk of shame,” Evelina said to Adriano. “I can’t believe you were going to let her leave here looking like she just spent the night with someone. Are you stupid?”
Adriano glared. “I didn’t want to wake you up.”
“And we have to leave soon,” Alessa added.
“Too late, I’m already up,” Evelina replied. “And seriously reconsidering staying here if I have to wake up like that again.”
Adriano cleared his throat. “Sorry.”
“You know what is sad about it all?”
“What?” Adriano asked.
“I wasn’t even surprised and I didn’t even have to wonder who it was you brought home. That … says a lot, Adriano.”
“We good?” he asked.
“We’re good. And of course, I’ll keep my mouth shut.”

Alessa laughed under her breath. “Thanks.”

Play dirty. It’s the only way to win in a war.

Alessa Trentini follows the rules, or so it seems on the outside. A certain Conti has always been able to sway her inner rebel and keep her out of trouble, but even Adriano won’t be able to get her out of her brother’s mess. In a war, no woman is safe if her hand in marriage can advance her family in the world of the mafia. But mistakes of the past have a way of slipping into the present and Alessa will soon learn that even the most shameful of secrets can get her everything she wants.

Adriano Conti’s loyalties are torn as he’s forced to stand at his father’s side while Riley uses his wife’s murder as a way to get higher. Blood comes first and then the Outfit. The one thing he doesn’t question in the war between the families is Alessa Trentini and even that doesn’t seem possible when he’s forced to watch Alessa be used as another man’s pawn. Adriano has his own role to play to get what he wants.

The families in the Outfit have never been more divided than they are now. Blood continues to spill as revenge takes center stage and more lives are lost. But every man in the family is fighting for something different and no one’s intentions can be trusted. Playing a dirty game might be the only way to stay alive.

Even if that means ruining it all.

**Please Note: Reckless should not be read before Deathless & Divided. This novel is NOT considered a standalone in the series as part of the timeline runs concurrent with the first book in the series, Deathless & Divided.

Hot Model Mine - Mine to Love by @LeaBronson #NewRelease @EvernightPub

Book two of the Hot Model Mine trilogy is finally here! Did you wonder what happened to erotic romance author Andrea and her irresistible cover model, Yushka, after the conference in Cannes?

In book one, The Perfect Shoot, things were complicated for the couple. He was much younger than her—practically the same age as her twins—and she'd spent half her life without a man. After much reflection, she ended up giving into her desire and taking Mr. Hot Model for lover. But what then after they traveled back to their separate lives?

Wait no more: They're here to tell the continuation of their sizzling love story :)

The writing conference in sunny Cannes was fantastical, a dream. Back at home, reality catches up with author Andrea Johnson and the sexy cover model of her book, Yushka. With tough working schedules, challenging family relations, and seductive temptation from all sides, the couple’s explosive romance is put to the test.

Will their love be strong enough to have a future?

While Yushka gets his duffel bag in the back seat, I lean against the side of the Corolla and stretch my arms on top of its roof. “You got everything?”

“Yeah.” He lifts the bag over his shoulder and tilts his head in direction of the front door. “We good to go?”

My pulse beats a little faster at the thought of him dropping that bag on my bedroom floor and lifting me in his arms instead. I’m so excited to be with him, I simmer inside, aching to touch and hold him. I want to have all of him at once, right now.

A spark of amusement plays in his gorgeous Asian eyes as he waits for me to make a move. “What’s on your mind, Princess?”

Holding his gaze, I smile, my fingers tapping a beat on the car hood to buy some time because I don’t know what to reply. I have a feeling whatever might come out of my mouth now, like I can’t wait to rip those clothes off you or I’m going to make you scream, will sound too cheesy. Why do we need to put our attraction into words, anyway? Once we’re home, there’ll be no reason to talk that much. We’ll do the talking with our more-than-capable hands and … um … mouths.

I tap a quick rap before stepping back from the car. “Come on.”

“Okay.” Widening his smile, he follows me to the front entrance.

I unlock and push the wood door open. “I hope your bag’s not too heavy. The elevator doesn’t work.”

“When are they gonna fix it?”

“Huh, good question.” I step forward, but when in the doorway, I spin to hold the door open for him. “I have no idea.”

“No?” With a raised brow, he passes me.

Just then, I move toward him, chest-to-chest, blocking him and his thick bag between myself and the doorframe.

“Oh!” He laughs.

As the door pushes into my back, squeezing me tighter against him, I put my hands on his waist. First above his clothes––the thick leather jacket and his shirt––then sneaking underneath both of them, my fingers splaying on his warm skin and stroking him.

Completely stuck, he tilts his head and stares into my eyes, his own sparkling with playfulness. “What are you up to?”

“You have a problem?” I move my hands out from beneath his shirt and go downward to palm his tight ass cheeks, pulling his crotch to me. My lower stomach and increasingly heating inner thighs seek to meet his. I want to be so near him he’ll feel my lust, and I want his lust to grow, too. I need us to join and be a match, a melting pot of desire, irresistible and untamable.

“I have to bribe you?” he asks, voice lower, and leans down to kiss me.

How did he guess? At the warm touch of his parted lips, delight rushes through me as if I’d had a shot of alcohol.

He retreats his face a few inches, enough to have a view of what he just kissed. “This good enough for you?” His voice comes out husky, a bit short of breath. With his free hand, he strokes and kneads my butt.

“One more,” I mouth with the next exhale of air. Though the door bores painfully into my back, I don’t want to move, loving the feel of being so close to Yushka, so intimate. It’s amazing how instantaneous and intense our connection is. Just wait till we get our clothes off.

Again, his warm lips land on mine, and we kiss greedily, nose-to-nose, wet tongues playing with each other. My inner pussy muscles clench, remembering too well what it’s like to have his cock inside. I breathe faster. A growing hardness in his crotch presses against me, provoking more tightening. Oh, God. Hot wetness glides down my pussy, wetting my panties. So ready, so soon… I mew into his mouth, and he rewards me with a guttural response, our mouths practically eating each other.

But this isn’t the right place. We need to move and play this torturous game and its grand finale somewhere else.

Releasing his lips, I gasp from our separation, but still manage to pull away.

“Fuck, you’re hot.” He inhales deeply and looks up, feverish eyes widening and trying to refocus.

As I step backward, forcing the door to open again, cold evening air sneaks between our heated bodies. “Let’s go,” I say with a croak, my chest heaving.

He gives a small nod and steps inside the low-lit lobby.

What I #AmReading this week!
I've got two books on my TBR list this week.

The first is the third book in Molly Ann Wishlade's Duggans of Montana series. I really enjoyed the first two in this series, and I'm not a big fan of cowboys, so that says a lot. I'm looking forward to digging into Her Montana Cowboy.

And for my second read, I'll be doing a re-read of The Swan Thieves. The first time around, I don't think I took the time to appreciate the depth of this novel and the story. I want to give it a second go. Some books work better for me that way.

#Review of The White Lily - @jandsmatt #NewRelease Romantic Suspense @Crimson_Romance

The White Lily, Book Two, The Harvester Series

Bethany-Kris's Review
****Five Stars****

Lilith "Lily" Munroe, FBI Cult Specialist and survivor, has just been brought in on the Harvester case because of her knowledge and experience with cults of this type. She doesn't want the job--she liked her desk work and hiding from field work to search for missing children. Ever since her kidnapping and torture years ago when she had gone undercover in a different cult case, she's made her life mission to never be put in that situation again. But she's good at her job and once she finds out babies are being taken from their homes, she can't refuse. Enter former New Horizon cult member turned reformed man and Australian millionaire Jacob Andrews. While looking for his sister who was still a member of New Horizon, he comes face to face with the FBI who mistakes him for his dead fraternal twin brother. Lily and Jacob are forced to work together to save not only the missing babies, but also themselves, too. But a growing attraction and the Harvester on the loose might makes things a little more difficult than either of them realized.

It's no secret that I adore Susanne Matthew's romantic suspenses. She's pretty amazing at writing a tale that keeps you engaged and turning the pages, needing to know what's coming next and how this could possibly end. I have to say, she did it again with The White Lily.

Lily is an amazing female character. She's strong in a quiet way because she's had to be. She's got a love for nice shoes, even if it is a way to manage her stress an anxiety. Suffering from PTSD and trying to move forward in life from the horrible experience she suffered at the hands of a sadistic member of a cult she had infiltrated when she was just a young, new agent. Jacob, on the other hand, is determined, fascinating, and relentless. He knows what he wants and he's not afraid to admit the mistakes of his past to help correct the wrongs being done and help the people who need it.

Like I said, amazing.

This cult keeps getting crazier and crazier. I love Matthews' mind. I want to climb inside just to know what's going to happen in the next book, The White Iris. I would say The White Lily had a touch more suspense than romance, but it worked really well.

I need the next book.

The Harvester is out there...watching, waiting, biding his time.

FBI cult specialist Lilith Munroe lives in dread that one day the man who tortured her when a case went bad will find her again. So leaving her sanctuary in Quantico to join the Harvester Task Force in Boston is her version of hell. But the Harvester is kidnapping babies, and Lilith's profiling skills may mean the difference between life and death for the most innocent in society.

Australian millionaire and former member of the New Horizon commune Jacob Andrews returns to the United States searching for his sister. Instead of the happy reunion he expects, he discovers she is dead and his twin brother may be responsible. He agrees to lend his law enforcement skills to help find his former cult leader before the man can implement his plan to kill millions.

Now uneasy partners, Jacob and Lilith must learn to trust each other even as they fight their growing attraction. But when Lilith's greatest fears materialize, will Jacob be able to set aside his anger and save the woman he loves?

Jacob couldn’t decide if the man was giving him the third degree or just making conversation. There was no point in being rude since he was going to have to ask for his help locating Eloise if she wasn’t already in this building. He’d spent enough time in police stations to know the cells were probably downstairs, not up.
“A little of this and that. Primarily, I’m a fruit farmer. You’ve probably eaten melons I’ve grown. My wine is becoming quite popular over here, too.”
“I’ve had Australian wine. It’s not bad. As far as melons go, my wife eats fruit as if it’s going out of style and melon of any kind is a favorite.”
The elevator doors slid open, and Jacob stepped back, bumping into the detective who’d moved behind him. Standing in front of the door were four men, one of whom could probably give any professional wrestler a run for his money—all of them with Glocks pointed directly at Jacob’s chest.
“Bloody hell ...”
“Charade’s over, you bastard,” said Detective Halliday, grabbing his arm from behind, snapping a handcuff on his wrist, and pulling his other arm behind his back to cuff it, too. Once he was restrained, the men put their guns down, but the wrestler came forward, grabbed him by the head, and pinched Jacob’s nose, forcing him to open his mouth if he wanted to breathe.
Had the members of the Boston Police Department gone crazy?
A uniformed officer grabbed his jaw, pulling it open so wide it hurt, and examined his teeth.
“He’s clean. Good dental work, by the way, not like the rest of them.”
The man released his jaw at the same time the wrestler released his nose and head. Jacob drew a deep, shaky breath and gulped air, no longer worried only about Eloise but concerned for his own safety. Either all these detectives were insane, which was unlikely, or his sister had stumbled into a hell of a mess.
“Have you all gone mad? What’s going on here? I don’t know what you think I’ve done or who you think I am,” although since Eloise had mentioned Jimmy, they might be mistaking him for his twin brother, “but I can assure you I’ve only been in the United States since yesterday afternoon.”
“Sure, Mr. Andrews,” Detective Halliday said, stressing the name as if it left a bad taste in his mouth. “Or perhaps I should say Colchester? Which one of the Chosen are you? Or maybe I should call you Prophet? Great disguise. That accent’s almost believable. You had me going with the farmer line. Pretty funny. You’re just ballsy enough to walk in like this and think we’d be too stupid to realize who you are. Take him into room three, empty his pockets, take off his shoes and belt, and for Christ’s sake, don’t take your eyes off him for a second. I don’t want another dead body on our hands.”
Jacob jerked his arm loose from the man holding him.
“Dead body? Where is my sister, Detective?”
“Eloise Colchester is your sister?” the detective snarled. “That’s rich. If she’s your sister, you sick son of a bitch, you know damn well where she is. She’s on a slab in the morgue where your fixer put her after he slit her throat and that of at least four others.”
“No! God, no,” Jacob cried out in anguish, dropping to his knees, breaking the other man’s hold on his arm. He was too late. His baby sister was dead, and it was his fault. “When? How?’
“Cut the theatrics. I’m not buying the act, but to refresh your memory, you had her executed nine weeks ago, the day we stormed your little horse farm and rescued the women you had there.”
Jacob straightened, shook off the officer’s attempt to grab his arm again, and stared into the detective’s eyes, taken aback by the hatred there.
“I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, Detective. You’ve obviously got the wrong man. What women? What horse farm? You’ve got kangaroos loose in the top paddock.”
“Drop the phony accent and shut up before I lose my temper and beat the crap out of you.” The detective turned to the two uniformed officers. “Get him out of my sight and tie him down. If he gives you any trouble, shoot the son of a bitch. You’ll be doing the world a favor.”

#Review of Fated Hearts by @BeckyFlade
Psychiatrist Henley Elliott fled her quiet life in Cleveland for a gypsy lifestyle, trying to stay one step ahead of her painful memories. When she breaks down in quirky little Trappers' Cove, Minnesota, she meets Sheriff Carter McAlister - a man healing from his own share of hidden heartbreaks.
At the request of a friend, Carter offers Henley a job to help her get back on her feet . . . but soon he can't resist trying to sweep the intriguing woman off them. Breaking through her carefully built shell proves to be a near-impossible task, and to make matters worse, a dangerous new presence in the Cove seems to be targeting Henley. They must learn to trust in each other in order to keep her safe.
Can Henley and Carter leave their secrets and scars in the past to get a second chance at happily ever after?
****Five "Dublin & Carter" Stars****
Henley Elliott has a lot to run from. A past, her mistakes, health issues she didn't want to face, and a family that couldn't care less as long as she wasn't embarrassing them again. Running is the only thing that feels right to her--settling down wasn't in the plans. Then her car breaks down just outside of Trapper's Cove, the kind of small-town where you're famous just by stopping into the diner for a meal. Here, Henley meets Carter McAlister, a small-town cop who once upon a time, used to be a big-time officer in Philly but with his own past to run from and his own healing time needed, found his way to Trapper's Cove, too. Neither Henley nor Carter are ready for the way each is drawn to one another, never mind the way they help push each other to be better, to heal. But the past has a way of catching up, and dangerous things are beginning to happen to Henley. Can Carter save her before it's too late?

In case you didn't know by the headline in my review, I would have given  this book five stars just based on Dublin and Carter alone. Seriously, I would have. Sometimes it's hard for an author to bring in pets and show how important they are to the MC without focusing too much on that aspect, but Miss Flade did it quite well. So well, in fact, that I kept turning the pages to see the next scene between Carter and his dog. It was so real to me because I could relate with my own dogs--especially the "stupid" part, haha. So I felt I had to mention that first.

I devoured Fated Hearts in just a few short hours. Devoured it. Between Henley's secretive past, her strange but pretty cool ability (read to find out what it is, you'll get no spoilers from me) and the way you could visibly feel these characters healing one another, I couldn't put it down. Carter is a great hero--he embodies every sense of that word and he owns it, even if sometimes he doesn't feel like one.

The romance built over time, it wasn't instant and all the better for it, really. It was true to these characters and their emotional roadblocks that kept them in their own walls of safety. Opening up often means getting hurt for some. Especially these characters. They're not perfect. Flade captures the essence of being flawed but craving the desire and will to be better perfectly.

It's an amazing, suspenseful story. Fated Hearts has some great lines, an awesome plot, and characters I wouldn't mind meeting in real life. And now I am super curious about Mag's and Aidan's story in Fated Souls, especially after what we learned about them in this one.

I give this five stars all the way.

A Peek at Reckless & Ruined's Prologue #ComingSoon
Usually I share the Prologue and/or Chapter One of my novels on release day, but this will be a bit of a change. Chapter One of Reckless & Ruined will post on release day.

All of the War books start with a Prologue -- a pivotal moment in the heroines' lives that changed who they were or changed their direction in life for whatever reason. Usually, it has something to do with who would eventually become their future lover (the hero).

Deathless and Lily's prologue was the only book of the four that kind of deviated from that plan, but at the same time, it didn't. Her family home was so incredibly life changing for her and as we saw in Deathless, a lot of Lily's younger memories were tainted by that hard time in her life, forgotten to the past. We will see in Theo's story, though, how Damian was involved that night, how he was there when they found the DeLuca family murdered by the mob. Or at the very least, we'll see mentions of it.

So, I'm sharing Reckless' prologue to give you a taste of how Adriano and Alessa started. You see, they've been close for a long while. What happens in Reckless was unavoidable eventually. It's how they deal with it that matters the most.

Hugs, love, and happy reading!

“You’re only young and stupid once.”
Alessa thought that had to be the dumbest thing she’d ever heard. “Exactly. You’re only stupid once, Dean. In my family, that means you only get one chance not to mess it up. Because if you do, you’re screwed.”
Dean laughed, taking another step toward Alessa. She backed further under the willow tree, keeping a safe distance between her and Dean. The guy was cute, as far as that went. It was just about the only thing he had going for him and cute didn’t add up to a whole hell of a lot when your personality was seriously lacking. Dean didn’t seem to understand the word ‘no’ when Alessa said it.
It was just too damn bad his father was a Capo in la famiglia. For Alessa, that put her in a bad situation whenever Dean showed up. Terrance, Alessa’s grandfather and the boss of the Outfit, didn’t mind Dean or the guy’s father.
Dean screamed bad news in the worst way.
She didn’t care that he was affiliated with the Chicago mob at only eighteen-years-old or that he was as arrogant as they came. No, that wasn’t it at all. Alessa’s biggest issue with Dean was that his interest in her only went as far as her position as Terrance Trentini’s granddaughter. Dean didn’t like Alessa because of who she was as a person, but rather, he liked the people she came from. The guy just wanted to situate himself with a pretty face, a good last name, and a piece of ass to get him higher in the mob.
Alessa wasn’t going to be that girl.
“Come on, Alessa,” Dean said, grinning as he took another step toward her. “Go out with me and have some fun tonight.”
“Like how you took my sister out last month?” Alessa asked.
Dean’s jaw tightened. “We’re just friends.”
Alessa loved her sister Abriella, as far as that went. But Abriella was a little on the wild side and didn’t know how to follow the rules. If she went out with Dean, it wasn’t because the two were friends. And if Abriella didn’t take Dean out again, he definitely wasn’t worth Alessa’s time.
“I didn’t realize I had the word idiot stamped on my forehead,” Alessa said, smiling as sweetly as she could manage. “Let me go wash that off for you so there’s no confusion the next time we meet.”
Using her sarcasm as an easy and obvious way out of the conversation, Alessa ducked under the low lying branch of the willow tree and headed back toward the Trentini mansion. She didn’t make it very far. Dean caught up to her before she could get out of the privacy of the tree, grabbed her around the waist, and pulled her back into his chest.
“Hey, let me go,” Alessa barked, jerking away from Dean.
Dean held tight. “Come on, Alessa. Don’t be like that. We both know—”
“—That you’re a fucking tool,” Alessa interrupted hatefully.
Dean grabbed even harder, squeezing the air right out of her lungs. Panic saturated Alessa’s insides, freezing her in place as Dean grabbed the ends of her wavy brown hair and tugged firmly enough for it to really hurt. All of the air in Alessa’s lungs rushed out in a whoosh.
“Be nice and stop acting like such a spoiled little bitch,” Dean said in her ear.
Alessa shivered, the disgust rolling thick. “Let me go, Dean.”
“No, I think we’re good here. First time I’ve actually been able to get you alone. I think you’re one of those girls that likes to tease and fuck around with a guy until he can’t take it anymore and just snaps. Then you get it rough just like you like, right?”
“No,” Alessa whispered.
She didn’t know what he was talking about, but she didn’t like it. Fear compounded in her heart. She was too far away from the back of Trentini mansion to be heard even if she yelled at the top of her lungs for help.
Alessa felt stupid for having left the afternoon party without taking someone with her, but everyone else was busy doing their own thing. She had just wanted to get the hell away from Dean and his constant badgering. When she thought Dean wouldn’t notice her missing, Alessa took the chance to slip out of the back of the house and take a walk on the large property. She needed the breather. Dean followed her like the creep he was.
Dean’s hand drove down Alessa’s back to her ass where he grabbed her through her summer dress. When he tried to stick his hand under her dress, Alessa yelped and pulled away from him fast enough to take him off guard. Spinning in her ballet flats, she struck him on the cheek with her open palm. The sound of the slap reverberated through the quiet hush of the wind whistling through the tree leaves.
“You bastard,” Alessa hissed, readying to hit him again if he came near her. “I am not some piece of ass for you to handle however you want. Don’t you understand that I don’t want you? I have never wanted you, Dean! You’re a self-righteous, entitled, disgusting little prick. And you’ll be lucky if I don’t tell my father and grandfather what you just tried to do to me!”
Dean laughed a dark sound. “Your father? You mean the guy who isn’t even good enough to be in with the Outfit, but just a used up lawyer for your grandfather? Get real, Alessa. What is he going to do to me, huh?”
“Your grandfather thinks I’m made of gold,” Dean interrupted with a cruel smile. “Go on ahead and whine to him all you want, but he isn’t going to believe you. In fact, if my father gets his way, I’ll be standing there to meet you at the end of an aisle while you wear a white dress. Keep holding onto your skirt like that’s going to protect you, Alessa. I’ll get it one way or the other.”
Alessa felt sick. “Fuck you.”
Like hell and over her dead body. She would never marry this man.
“That’s the plan, babe,” Dean said, smirking wickedly. “Even if it takes me a little while to get you there. You’re sixteen now, but eighteen is just around the corner. How long do you think you’ll last after that before your grandfather marries you off to the best man he can find in the Outfit? Right now, I’m looking mighty fucking good to him.”
Alessa barely held back the vomit. She trembled from her head to her toes as her hands balled into tight fists at her sides. “I’d slit my throat first.”
“So dramatic. I like a crazy girl. They’re always fun.”
What was wrong with this guy?
“Plus, you know Ben will make it happen,” Dean added with a wink. “He’s best friends with your grandfather and all. My uncle wouldn’t mind getting me a little closer to the top. You have to admit, we’d made a damn good pair.”
At Ben DeLuca’s name, Alessa barely managed to supress her shudder. Ben happened to be the right-hand man to Alessa’s grandfather and Dean’s uncle. Dean, being the son of Walter and Patricia Artino who were both thoroughly integrated with the DeLuca side of the Outfit, had a great deal of power behind him. Maybe even as much as Alessa had behind her. Patricia, Ben DeLuca’s younger sister, was also close to Alessa’s mother.
A marriage between her and Dean would put the Artino family front row and center for once. They were usually overshadowed by the DeLuca side of their family when it came to the mob. Alessa would not be that family’s way to the top, regardless of whatever plans Dean and his father might have had for her.
“Keep dreaming,” Alessa said, refusing to show Dean how his words affected her. Trentinis didn’t show fear, ever. Her grandfather wouldn’t marry her off to a man like Dean, right? “Because that’s all you’re ever going to get from me.”
Her words didn’t seem to faze Dean a bit. As he spoke, he moved toward her again. Slowly, one step after another, he came closer to Alessa like she was a mouse and he was a snake ready to swallow her whole. She felt cemented to the ground, unable to move or run.
“Think about it, Alessa. Your grandfather needs to set something up for when he’s good and done running the Outfit. Your father isn’t in with the family.”
“My brother—”
Dean barked out a laugh that chilled Alessa to the core. “Joel? He’s such a fuck up. Get your pretty little head out of the clouds, girl. He’s not going anywhere. Terrance is going to go for the next best thing—marrying his granddaughters off to the strongest and best families he can find. Look no further, Alessa. I’m exactly where you’re heading in the foreseeable future.”
Dean was close enough to reach out and grab her again if he wanted. She refused to give him that chance. Alessa’s legs finally decided to catch up with her screaming mind and pounding heart. She turned to bolt out of the cover the willow tree provided and ran straight into something hard.
The strong arms of Adriano Conti caught Alessa before she hit the ground. Something akin to a sob caught in her chest as Adriano righted her without a word and moved her slightly behind him. Alessa fisted her hands into the back of Adriano’s T-shirt like it was the only lifeline she had left.
“You all right?” Adriano asked, never taking his glare off Dean for a second.
“Yeah,” Alessa mumbled. “I’m okay, Adriano.”
Alessa felt Adriano’s hand reach back and cover hers. He squeezed her hand and then let it go. Adriano Conti was the same age as Alessa. They even went to the same private school. His father was heavily involved with her grandfather and the Chicago mob, seeing as how Riley Conti was the Outfit’s front boss.
What Adriano had never done, was pay Alessa very much attention. He stuck to his side of the Outfit, and Alessa stuck to hers. They passed one another by from time to time at family dinners and parties but they didn’t make an effort to be friends. Adriano was the high school football star, a mob principe for the Outfit, and a player on and off the field. Every single girl Alessa knew had tried to get a piece of this guy—her not included.
That didn’t mean she never wanted to, though. Alessa would be a damned liar if she ever said Adriano wasn’t gorgeous and interesting to her.
The contrast between Dean and Adriano under the willow tree as they had a stare down was visible to Alessa. Adriano might have been two years younger than Dean, but he towered over the man by at least six inches. Dean was tall and lean, but Adriano was built like the linebacker he was with broad shoulders, thick arms, and a stance that screamed for someone to back off.
Alessa could feel the muscles in Adriano’s back tighten like coils ready to spring. He practically vibrated under her touch. His teeth bared as he sneered in Dean’s direction like the guy was nothing more than a worm to be crushed under his shoe.
“Artino,” Adriano said, tipping his chin in Dean’s direction. “I thought that was you I saw following Alessa out here earlier.”
Dean scowled. “What about it?”
Adriano shrugged. “Nothing. But when a girl says back off, it means get the fuck away before she decides to hand you over your balls.”
“We were just having some innocent fun. Right, Alessa?” Dean asked.
Alessa glowered at him. “Sticking your hand up my dress is supposed to be fun for me?”
At that admission, Adriano lurched forward, going straight for Dean with a fist raised. Because Alessa was still holding onto Adriano’s shirt, she went with him. Luckily, Alessa managed to catch herself and let go of Adriano. Dean flew backward, his hands raised high in the air.
“Whoa, careful there, Adriano,” Dean said, grinning like an idiot. “You wouldn’t want to piss your father off by messing with someone affiliated.”
“Not made,” Adriano said through clenched teeth.
“What is that?”
Adriano flicked his hand in Dean’s direction like he was dismissing him and his warning. “You’re not made which means, you’re not important. I don’t give a fuck about you or your father.”
Dean scoffed. “We both know that isn’t true.”
“Wrong. Your first mistake was fucking around with a Trentini, but your second was assuming you know a goddamn thing about me.” Adriano looked like he was ready and revving for a fight with Dean. Alessa didn’t want to get Adriano in trouble but she didn’t think speaking up would stop him from kicking Dean’s ass. “I suggest you make your way back to the house before you end up eating your teeth and you’re stuck with sucking your food through a straw for the rest of your life.”
“Fuck with someone else,” Adriano interrupted coolly. “She’s not your toy.”
Alessa watched in fascination and confusion as Dean turned around and stalked off. Once she knew he was out of hearing range, Alessa finally relaxed enough to step away from the safety Adriano had provided her.
“Thank you,” Alessa said.
Adriano sighed, crossing his arms as he stared in the direction Dean had disappeared. “He’s something else.”
“A jerk.”
“I was going to say something worse, but that works, too,” Adriano muttered. “Don’t thank me for getting you out of that, but where in the hell is your brother?”
Adriano nodded. “He’s the only brother you’ve got, right?”
“Somewhere. I just wanted to get away from the party.”
Adriano didn’t look like he believed a word coming out of her mouth. “Actually, you were trying to get away from that fucking piece of shit. I saw how he was following you around and pestering you. Speak the hell up, Alessa. Nobody will stand for his bullshit if you say something about it.”
“He’s never done anything like this before,” Alessa said.
She wasn’t trying to defend Dean. His actions were beyond contempt. But he had never once gone as far as he had today.
“Right, whatever,” Adriano said, shaking his head. “What was he going on about before I stepped in, anyway?”
Alessa cringed, not wanting to go into that. Knowing Adriano, he probably wouldn’t care about Alessa’s fears of being married off. “Nothing.”
“Yeah?” Alessa asked.
Adriano took a step closer to Alessa. Unlike before with Dean, she wasn’t bothered by his close proximity. He reached out and tipped her chin up by using two of his fingers. She was at least a foot shorter than him and looking up made her feel incredibly small.
“Speak up, Alessa,” Adriano repeated softly.
“Nobody around here cares what a girl has to say, Adriano. You know that.”
“I care.”
Did he?
Alessa blinked, surprised. She didn’t know what else to say, but she wanted to get as far away from the topic of the Outfit as she could. “How’s football?”
Adriano cocked a brow, smirking. He watched her with his green eyes like she was the most important thing to grace his presence for the moment. The guy had skills. Alessa had to give him that.
“Boring,” he finally replied. “Football is boring.”
“Really? You seem to like it a lot.”
“I like a lot of things.”
“I noticed,” Alessa said before she could stop herself.
“Do you?”
Alessa’s cheeks heated under his heavy regard. She dropped his stare. “I just … never mind.”
“Hey, don’t do that,” he said, ticking his fingers under her chin again. Alessa couldn’t help but look at him. “Never do that, Alessa.”
“I’m not doing anything.”
Adriano laughed deeply. “Sure you’re not. Don’t be embarrassed, Lissa.”
No one called her that except her close friends at school and her family.
“I notice a lot of things about you, too,” Adriano added.
“Do you?” Alessa asked.
“Mmhmm. You don’t like football all that much, do you? I never see you hanging around the team spots or showing up at games and whatever.”
Alessa wondered why he had looked for her at all.
“No, I don’t like it all that much,” she replied. “The football players at our school have big heads and little brains.”
“All of us?”
Alessa smiled at his question. “Some of you. Maybe you could convince me otherwise.”
“Maybe,” he echoed.
“Are you interested in trying?”
Adriano flashed his white teeth in a sensual grin. “Very.”
